Pennsylvania is a Middle Atlantic state and is one of the original 13 colonies, becoming a state on Dec. 12, 1787. It is bordered by New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Ohio. The rectangular-shaped state is the 33rd largest in area.
Pennsylvania has two major metropolitan areas: Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, which is the state’s largest city. The state capital is Harrisburg. As of 2024, the state’s population was 13,078,751, making it the 5th most populated state.
Fun Facts about Pennsylvania
The first daily newspaper was published in Philadelphia on Sept. 21, 1784.
Hershey is considered the Chocolate Capital of the United States.
In Hazleton, there is a law on the books that prohibits a person from sipping a carbonated drink while lecturing students in a school auditorium.
Benjamin Franklin founded the Philadelphia Zoo, the first public zoo in the United States.
Fairmount Park in Philadelphia is the largest city park with over 8,000 acres.
In Philadelphia in 1775 Johann Behrent built the first piano in America calling it “Piano Forte.”
KDKA radio in Pittsburgh produced the first commercial radio broadcast.
Famous people from Pennsylvania include the actors Kevin Bacon and Bradley Cooper, musicians Frankie Avalon and Joan Jett, Benjamin Franklin, and Louisa May Alcott.
