Oregon was the 33rd state to join the union on February 14, 1859. Salem is the state capital and its largest city is Portland. Oregon is the 9th largest state in the U.S. and is bordered by the U.S states of California, Idaho, Nevada, Washington.

 

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of Oregon is 4,272,371 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 27th most populous state.

 

Fun Facts about Oregon

 

Oregon’s flag is unique in having a different image on each side. The front shows the state seal, while the back features a beaver, reflecting the state’s history and economy.

 

Crater Lake, with a depth of 1,949 feet, is the deepest lake in the United States. It was formed approximately 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted, and then collapsed.

 

Oregon’s Willamette Valley accounts for 99% of the hazelnut production in the U.S. (the remaining 1% is produced in the state of Washington).

 

Tater Tots were invented in Ontario, Oregon. Brothers Theodore and Nephi Grigg, created the tater tot in 1953 at their Ore-Ida food processing plant.

 

The Historic Columbia River Highway also known as the “King of Roads” was designated the first scenic highway in the U.S. and is a National Historic Landmark.
