NCP Blog: Say Cheese!

Cheese, cheese, glorious cheese! Can you tell I just love cheese? Want to know how much? For my last couple of birthdays, all I wanted was a charcuterie board with all types of cheeses, meats, and other goodies. And I have to say, they were delish! My kids are big fans of string cheese. So, I always keep a variety in my fridge.

Cheesy Panel Facts

Top cheeses purchased by NCP panel members based on total dollars spent in the past 12 months*:

  • American
  • Swiss
  • Cheddar

NCP panel members scanned over 16,000 unique UPC barcodes for cheese in the past 12 months. The split was almost 50/50 between NCP panel members’ purchases of clerk-served vs. self-served cheeses.*

*Many cheese products, such as those ordered at a store’s deli counter, don’t have a UPC barcode. In that case, panel members use the Non-Barcoded Items List in the NCPMobile app to report those purchases.

NCP panel members represent consumers all across the country by sharing their shopping experiences and opinions. Cheesy Fun Facts

Here are some fun facts about cheese courtesy of wisconsincheese.com:

  • There are more than 1,800 different kinds of cheese varieties in the world.
  • Mozzarella is the most popular cheese in America, thanks to our love of this fresh cheese as a pizza cheese.
  • The famous holes or eyes in cheeses like swiss and emmentaler (and other alpine-style cheeses that are part of any basic fondue recipe) are the result of carbon dioxide made by bacteria in the cheese, forming little air pockets as the cheese hardens.
