NCP Blog: Summer Beverage Trends

I don’t know about you, but during the hot and humid days of summer, I’m always looking for something refreshing to drink. Even though I drink water the majority of the time, sometimes plain water just doesn’t cut it. I love adding different fruits, herbs, and veggies (cucumbers) into pitchers of water for variety and flavor. I’ll combine lemon, cucumber and mint, lemon and basil, or just drop in some orange slices. There are so many combinations of flavors that can make water even more refreshing in the summertime. Of course, we don’t want to forget about the summertime staple beverages – iced tea and lemonade!

According to research conducted by NielsenIQ, these are the five key 2023 summer beverage trends.

Mocktails – Non-alcoholic beverages have been on the rise in the U.S. for years. Between August 2021 and August 2022, total dollar sales of non-alcoholic drinks in the U.S. stood at $395 million, showing a year-on-year growth of +20.6%.* Many consumers are seeking out new and innovative mocktail recipes that they can make at home. Cocktail mixer sales are up 8.6% over last year, while seltzers and tonics are up 17.7%.*

Fruit Infusions – Infusing water, tea, or mocktails with fresh fruits is a popular trend that is gaining popularity. Popular fruits that fall in this category are watermelon, up 11%, and blueberries, up 7.9%.*

Cold Brew – Cold brew coffee is another beverage that has been gaining popularity in recent years. Many brands are now selling pre-made cold brews so consumers don’t have to wait for their favorite drink. It’s pretty easy to make at home, too!

Health-Conscious Hydration – Functional and healthy drinks have emerged in recent years as many consumers’ go-to beverages. Sports drinks are up 8.3% over last year. Consumers are avoiding beverages that are loaded with artificial sweeteners, flavors, and colors. Drinks such as infused waters, kombucha, and herbal teas are all on the rise.
