Washington was the 42nd state to join the union on November 11, 1889. Olympia is the state capital and Seattle is its largest city. Washington is bordered by Idaho and Oregon and is the 18th largest state.

 

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of Washington is 7,958,180 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 13th most populous state.

 

 

It’s the only state named after a U.S. president, George Washington.

It’s home to multiple volcanoes, including Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, and Mount Adams.

It produces more apples than any other state in the country.

The majestic 14,410-foot-tall Mount Rainier is the highest point in the state. It became a national park in 1899.

Washington State Ferries, which provides transportation to many of the state’s islands, is the largest ferry operator in the country.

It’s the second largest wine-producing region in the country, boasting more than 1,000 wineries and 60,000+ acres of wine grapes.

Amazon was founded on July 5, 1994 by Jeff Bezos in Bellevue, WA after he relocated from New York City.

Many famous people were born in Washington including Jimi Hendrix, Bill Gates, Bing Crosby, and Adam West.
