Ohio was the 17th state to join the union on March 1, 1803. Columbus is the state capital and its largest city. Ohio is the 34th largest state and is bordered by the U.S states of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan.
Ohio gets its name from the Ohio River, which in turn, derives its name from the Seneca (Iroquois) word “ohi:yo”, meaning “good river” or “great river.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of Ohio is 11,883,304 (July 2024 est.); it ranks as the 7th most populous state.
Ohio’s state flag is the only U.S. state flag that is not a rectangle.
Ohio’s nickname, “The Buckeye State,” comes from the plentiful Ohio buckeye trees, whose nuts resemble a deer’s eye. The term “Buckeyes” is also used to refer to Ohio residents and the sports teams of The Ohio State University.
Seven U.S. presidents were born in Ohio: Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, and Warren G. Harding.
Dayton is considered the birthplace of aviation, as it was the hometown of the Wright brothers.
Cleveland is home to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, celebrating the history of rock and roll music, as well as the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Famous people born and/or raised in Ohio include Astronaut Neil Armstrong, NBA superstar LeBron James, renowned filmmaker and director Steven Spielberg, Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, and many more!
