Saturday, November 11, is Veterans Day, although it will be officially observed on Friday, November 10. This holiday is dedicated to all those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

 

History of Veterans Day

 

Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Veterans Day Facts

 

I’d like to share some interesting facts about Veterans Day that I found on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs site.

 

– Veterans Day does not include an apostrophe, but does include an “s” at the end of “veterans” because it is not a day that “belongs” to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.

 

– Veterans Day is always observed officially on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.

 

– Many people confuse Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a day for remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime.

 

– Several countries honor their veterans each year on November 11, although the names and types of commemorations differ somewhat from Veterans Day celebrations in the United States.
